We will visit them, bring them Holy Communion and, if needed, offer them the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick by one of our priests.

Pope Francis has issued a decree changing the way that the Holy Thursday foot-washing rite is celebrated around the world. The decree was published today by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and signed by prefect Cardinal Robert Sarah. The decree says that the rite should no longer be limited to men.
In a Jubilee Year, popes throughout the centuries have established special ways that Catholics can ask for and receive God’s mercy and forgiveness of their sins or the sins of a loved one who has died. These special graces are called “indulgences.” That word has sometimes had a negative meaning because of how the practice of granting indulgences was often abused or misused by individuals who believed one could buy or work for God’s forgiveness.

What if? There were no altar servers to carry the cross or prepare the altar; no musicians to help us pray by singing; no greeters to welcome us; no ushers to take up collections and help seat those who need assistance; no Lectors to proclaim the Word of the Lord, and no Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to distribute the Lord’s Body and Blood? Our churches would go undressed for the seasons without flowers during each changing liturgical season.
