PALO ALTO, CA -- A recent drop in blood donations has led the Stanford Blood Center to ask Bay Area residents to donate blood to help meet the needs of local hospitals. According to center officials, in the last few weeks there have been many surgeries requiring numerous blood products. That, coupled with a drop in donations over the summer, has caused the current inventory to be critically low.
Center officials are now requesting blood donations from the public.
"We've appealed to our current donor base, and now we're reaching out to others in the community," Stanford Blood Center spokesman Loren Magana said in a statement.
Donors should be in good health with no cold or flu symptoms. They must also eat well prior to donating, drink fluids and provide a photo ID at the time of donation.
More information about donating blood and scheduling an appointment is available at Sbcdonor.org or by calling 888-723-7831.
