Feeding the undernourished in our community and at special areas around the world, particularly where parish and family members work in developing countries, is essential.
The acronym "
"SHARING OURSELVES WITH UNDERNOURISHED PEOPLE".
In 1973, an informal group of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish decided that an informal group of parishioners would get to gether and enjoy a simple meal of soup and raise money to feed undernourished people. This group, now part of the greater St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, meets twice a month, except during Lent, when they meet weekly.
Parishioners come with a bowl, a spoon, and perhaps some bread or crackers. Depending upon the anticipated size of the group, between 2 or 3 people agree in advance to bring a large pot of soup to share and a few bring a bottle of wine and/or juice.
Each family attending the meal and sharing the food, puts a check or cash into a box, representing the money they would have spent at the market or dining out that night. These funds are deposited at the parish and annually, at the last SOUP, a tally of the funds is announced and where they will be distributed. Specific distribution sites are agreed upon annually. Father Jack Donald, (a long time OLR family and parishioner), who has a mission in South America, as well as other local area food programs are part of the fund distribution.
Beginning at 6 p.m. on the 3rd Wednesday of September and continuing on the first and third Wednesday of each month, except during Lent when it is every Wednesday, and ending on the 3rd Wednesday in May.
