Rev. Matthew D. Stanley
Assigned on July 1, 2010
Welcome to our New
& Improved St. Thomas Aquinas Parish website. One of my first goals upon arriving as Pastor was to provide a website that was user-friendly, fresh, interesting and
up-to-date. It is important for our parishioners to have access to upcoming events, cu
rrent news, and helpful information concerning our many ministries.
A little bit about me. I was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 8, 1962. I attended St. Catherine & Immaculate Conception elementary schools through 5th Grade. In 1972, our family migrated to San Jose. I attended Vineland elementary school and St. Francis Cabrini. We then moved to San Ramon, CA where I attended Country Club elementary and California High School. In 1977 we moved back to San Jose where I attended and graduated from Leland High School— class of 1980.
I was accepted as a seminarian for the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1980 and entered St. Joseph College in Mountain View, CA. In March of 1981, I joined the newly created Diocese of San Jose. I finished my studies at St. Joseph College in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy. I continued my studies for the priesthood at St. Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park, CA. I was ordained to the Diaconate on January 19, 1991 and the Priesthood on May 18, 1991 at St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica by Bishop Pierre DuMaine, First Bishop of San Jose.
My first assignment was as Parochial Vicar at St. Mary in Gilroy, CA, under the leadership of now Msgr. Francis Cilia and Fr. Dan Derry. In 1996, I was transferred and assigned as Parochial Vicar at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish under Fr. Barry Freyne. Two years later, I was appointed the 14th Pastor of Holy Family Parish on July 1, 1998 where I served until June 30, 2010. Bishop Patrick J. McGrath appointed me the 6th Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish on July 1, 2010.
I am an avid and passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox (World Series Champions in 2004, 2007 and 2013) and the New England Patriots (Super Bowl Champions in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014). My greatest wish is to meet Tom Brady, the Pope is second. I enjoy reading books on U.S. and Church history. I dabbled in acting while in High School and College. My present “first lady” is my 7-year old tabby cat named Julie. I have 2 younger brothers, 1 niece and 3 nephews, and my parents Max and Pat live in Surprise, AZ.
